What are Layouts?
Fields and layouts
A card stores values in named fields. Its configuration determines which values appear on the front and back and how they are rendered.
Current decks
Open "Edit Deck" to configure fields, their types, and which sides display them. Built-in types include Rich Text, Audio, Code, and TeX, so these features do not require writing HTML.
Use the deck's "Settings" > "Card Orientation" to review normally, reversed, or in mixed orientation. This changes the presentation, not the card's review history.
Advanced HTML/CSS deck configurations also let you customize templates and styles in Edit Deck.
Legacy decks
Older decks may have a "Layouts" menu item and a layout selector in their review settings. A layout can contain front-side HTML, back-side HTML, and CSS.
Field placeholders must match field names, including capitalization. For example, a deck with fields named Front and Back can use this front template:
{{Front}}
And this back template:
{{FrontSide}}
<hr />
{{Back}}
{{FrontSide}} includes the rendered front. Custom templates determine what reversing a card will actually reveal, so check the preview after making changes.
